happy holidays!

wishing you a wonderful christmas holiday and a safe, happy, healthy and exciting new year!!

fav finds | week ten

love this so.

love this idea for christmas morning, although you'd have to start it in the middle of the night.  this or this might actually be a better idea for christmas morning.

some of the best photography advice ever.  which has now been followed up with this.

made this soup last week and it was amazing. i used heavy cream instead of evaporated milk.

printed and posted in my office because i need to get my butt back in gear.

remember...

i love this photo so much, i can barely stand it [wish i knew who took it].

i kind-of-sort-of-really would like to walk into the grocery store with this.

might have to do this one day.

love this DIY print share from angela hardison. joy to the world. peace on earth. she designed it for the holidays but it really could stay up all year IMHO. we have a large vintage school map hanging in our dining area. this idea now has me thinking about stenciling some words on our map.

tried and true favorite, from childhood. and yes, i need to carb / sugar detox in january.

must read. top five regrets.

i want one of these really, really bad.

something to really think about

please...

santa's lap

just shared this with the littles, as they have NEVER sat on santa's lap. when we talked about seeing santa yesterday, ryder said, no way, i'm not seeing santa; you always say not to talk to strangers. skyler replied with, yea, i'm not seeing santa either. the littles have always been a bit scared of santa (and the characters at disney). and so it goes --  another year without sitting on santa's lap.

saw this improv on color me katie's blog, whose site always makes my day a bit brighter.

family favs | 2011

sharing some favorites of my kids from this past year.  my goal was to narrow it down to 20 images; however, i didn't quite make it.  28 images | 35 photographs...

one of the best changes i made with my photography in 2011 was to take more everyday photos of my kids.  i plan on doing even better in 2012.

when you find me

when you find me: a short film inspired by eight winning photographs chosen by ron howard. the winning photo for the relationship category was captured by a local friend of mine, lexia.

and i just read on lexia's facebook that you can watch the film online HERE until december 19th.  this will be your only chance to see the film unless you live in one of the locations where the film will premiere, which from what i understand will be in the cities where the winners live.

here's the film trailer...

even though the movie should be coming to tampa, i can't wait to watch it online. congratulations to all the winners!!

this is my kind of wrapping. you can find the tape here and here.

i have a thing for vintage fabrics, linens and wallpaper. and this is great.

i'm doing this as soon as we're back from nevada! but i want to do non-holiday versions. will be perfect for the trinkets my kids collect, e.g. shells, bottle caps, etc.

i dream about shots like this with my own family. more inspiration on this blog. sigh!!

did i share this before? just makes my heart so happy.

love this awesome blog post -- 30 things to stop doing to yourself. and love the blog in general.

i'm super excited to share that i'll be holding my third online breaking the mold mini-workshop via the bloom forum -- january 23rd - february 6th.  this workshop is for bloom forum members only -- so if you're interested in registering for this workshop, the first step is to become a bloom forum member. to become a bloom forum member or for additional information, please click the bloom logo below...

The Bloom Forum

This is what a few of the previous breaking the mold workshop participants had to say ...

I can't thank you enough for your amazing workshop. It went above and beyond anything I had ever expected. I came into the workshop hoping to learn more about photography, I never dreamed of the personal journey it would take me on or the growth I would have. I have come away appreciating my vision as an artist and not worrying about others. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being so open and honest. I have grown leaps and bounds and look forward to continuing to grow even more. - Stephanie

i'm so sad that our workshop is over, but i just wanted to take a minute to send you a quick note. this was the very first workshop i have ever taken, i had no real expectations. i can tell you that the last three weeks were unlike anything i thought i would experience in a photography workshop... it was almost like therapy for me, really!  i am self taught, and have struggled with the mentality that i'm not up to par because i don't have the piece of paper to prove that i deserve to be here. i finally think i'm starting to see that i don't need to be technically perfect to be great at what i do. really, i could ramble on forever but i really just wanted to say thank you! thank you for helping me believe in myself, for bringing so much passion and inspiration to me in a short time and thank you for taking the time to teach us all and for being you!! i have never really surrounded myself with a group of my peers, it's been an amazing ride. - lila

I am sad that our time has come to an end in your new workshop 'Breaking the Mold'. I have enjoyed it immensely.

We so often second-guess our instincts and I have learned lately that mine are very loud and rarely go away. It is funny too, I don't often shy away from it, unless there is fear involved - fear of rejection, fear of not being validated, fear of moving forward, fear of dwelling too much on the past, fear of trying something new, fear of the competition. Your workshop has not only validated me, my strengths, my weaknesses, but it also brought my journey to a whole other level. I hope that I will continue to adapt and transform and ask myself all the questions you asked of us in your workshop. It was fast moving, made me reflect and helped me see things way more clearly. That is a gift.

There are very few people in my life who have truly given me inspiration, made me want to move forward and try something new. But you sure have! You have allowed me to let loose and share in a comfortable and giving environment. You were warm, generous and giving!!! I so appreciated all your candor. In our short two weeks, you have definitely given me confidence, helped me make sense of the issues and doubts I have been feeling for awhile and made me want to be a better me, for my clients and for my family and friends. Everyone needs that someone to get you "unstuck". Your words, your exercises for us, and your explanation of your own photography has heightened my love and passion for photography so much more than I ever thought possible. - Sara

ONLINE WORKSHOP DETAILS: 1. This workshop is for bloom members only; therefore, you must be a member of the forum to take the workshop. lensbaby | interview and info

so fun to see my lensbaby interview reposted on the lensbaby blog yesterday.  not sure if i ever shared the interview here...

i get asked a lot of questions regarding shooting with a lensbaby (i've actually received five emails over the past couple days).  most often, it's inquiring about my favorite lensbaby products or which products i'd recommend. so i thought i'd share a bit about that here (lensbaby makes for a great christmas gift).

first, you need a lens.  i have both the composer and composer pro lenses. the composer pro is definitely more solid / sturdy feeling.  and for a $50 difference, i'd go with the pro.

then you need an optic (or two or three...). i started using a lensbaby years ago, with the double glass optic. some are discouraged by the fact that with the double glass optic, you have to internally swap aperture rings.  however, honestly...i rarely swap the ring. most of the time i'm shooting with with the f/4 ring in.

not long ago, lensbaby released the sweet 35 optic, which is awesome because you can adjust the aperture on the outside [versus having to insert a new aperture ring in the optic].  the sweet 35 is an awesome optic; however, for me personally, i've become so used to my double glass optic (some habits are hard to break) and i seem to be more of a 50mm shooter than a 35mm shooter.  so i still seem to default much of the time to using the double glass optic.

i have almost all the optics and wish i could share more thoughts on the other optics but i haven't shot with any others -- YET!! it's definitely one of my 2012 goals; experimenting and playing with the other lensbaby optics.  anyone want to model for me?

here's a few of my favorite lensbaby photos shot in 2011...

and i'm so honored to have this shot grace lensbaby's sweet 35 optic box.

do you remember?

the above is not my photo.  i wish it was. i actually wish it was a photo of me with one of my babies. but it's not; it is a photo taken by my dear friend, steph [lifeography].  she facebooked the photo today, with the title -- do you remember holding your babies this way?

the sad thing is...i don't remember. well i do remember if i try really, really hard, but i want more. i want the photos, to remind me. i want the photos, to take me back to that magical place that i'll never physically go to again. sadly, i don't have that many photos from when sky and ryder were babies. especially photos that included me with them.

and sadly, i have NO video of my children or family. and THAT pains me so deeply. one of my goals for 2012 is to learn video AND to have my own family captured on video. i'm determined to capture my children more on video, even if it's iphone video.  the absolute best camera is the one you have with you, right?!!

fav finds | week eight

since i'm pretty bah-humbug right now, i decided to focus on christmas this week. yes, today is the day that i'm going to shake this grumpiness and get in the christmas spirit. because my attitude pretty much sucks [thanks to renovation yuck and a messy, cluttered house] and it's not fair to the kids. not one bit!!  so, here we go... we've been trying to figure out what we're going to do with outdoor lights, with this house. last year, we tried our usual -- big colorful lights, hung straight along the roof line. but with this spanish-style adobe, it just didn't work well. today, i came across this and i think hanging something like this in our entryway would be fun and pretty much perfect.

one hula hoop (spray painted) + two strings of icicle lights and duct tape = outdoor chandelier

i'd love to someday do a family fingerprint ornament. would be a great ornament to pass down to each kid.

since we leave in a week, for nevada, and still don't have a tree, i love the idea of doing something like this -- vintage containers filled with pine saplings. getting a tree[s] is my mission after seeing the muppet christmas movie today.

i'd love to cover my front windows with hanging snowflakes, like this.

and free printable snowflake patterns

i've loved this idea for years.  someday...

a few cute free printable gift tags here, here and here.

my friend, heather, gave me the idea of doing homemade christmas ornaments every year using the kids' photos. maybe cookie cutter ornaments could be our ornament project this year.

peanut butter reindeer cookies. kids would love to make these.

love this idea, either for the cards you receive every year [and then display them on your coffee table every christmas] or to simply keep your own cards together, from over the years. i'm digging this blog too; a new one to follow and be inspired by, for sure.

wishing you a holly jolly christmas

now to get my annual family books [christmas presents] ordered and get off this dang computer for the rest of the day. xo scrooge schwedhelm

it's that time of year

...to finish and upload my family's annual book. makes me teary as i look through our family photos from this past year and put together our book. and i so love that my kids look through the books over and over again, giggling as they flip through the previous years' books.  they just happened to be flipping through the books today -- showing me all the pages that bring back memories or simply make them laugh. :-) mmmm...i treasure these books more than i can even express. worth every bit of time it takes to make them!! not to mention, they make fabulous christmas gifts too.

here's this year's layout...

[larger version HERE]

and here's a few of my favorite page spreads...

makes my heart so very happy!!!

retouching | what is too much?

my earlier blog post regarding redbook's faith hill [2007] cover photo seems to have gotten quite a bit of attention -- both positive and negative.  while i really do appreciate all comments, i feel it necessary to clarify and expand upon a few things... first, my parenting was questioned in a comment. and while you can attack almost anything about me, please don't question my parenting abilities [or my children] because you don't know anything about either. no, i DON'T let my kids read redbook or any similar type of magazine; however, they DO see these types of magazines every time we go to the grocery store. or maybe they're on the table at a friend's house. magazine covers can be seen all over the place. and it doesn't take my 8-year-old very long to read the messages on those magazine covers. i work very hard to actively parent and educate my children -- to the best of my ability -- which happens to include such concepts as self-esteem, confidence, health, inner beauty, etc.

regarding retouching...i do touch up people. i push love handles. i slim women's arms. i soften wrinkles. i lessen double chins. i'm absolutely NOT against retouching. but i do so within limits. i do so within reason. and i think that's really my point with faith hill's cover photo -- they went to excess. they gave her the arm and waist of a 10-year-old. is it really necessary to go to those extremes? is it necessary to make jada P's skin lighter, as someone commented? i guess every artist [or editor] has their own take on what is considered within reason. and i guess ultimately, as a fellow artist, i should respect that. but it doesn't mean i can't be bummed out that so many of our magazines are showing women, whose bodies and looks are absolutely unattainable.

why am i so sensitive about all of this?  because i am a woman who has greatly struggled with self-esteem over the years, especially as a teenager. and so yes, maybe that makes me a bit more sensitive to the messages that our magazines are sending to women, to men, to our children.

as a teenager and young adult, i very secretly suffered from both bulemia and anorexia [at varying times]. i wanted to look like the women i saw in these magazines. i wanted a tiny waist and big boobs. i had photos plastered all over my closet door -- longing to be thin and beautiful and sexy, like the women i saw featured in these magazines over and over again.

i'm not sure where i'm really going with all of this. and i'm not saying my opinion is the right opinion. but i do feel that media impacts our society more than many even begin to realize.

curious as to what others think about how much retouching, tweaking, liquifying, etc. is too much, i decided to pose the question on facebook.  here's a few of the responses [selected at random]:

i try not to unless a client requests it. Sometimes there's just a little something that is distracting so i'll clean it up. or for Boudoir shots, I'll do more retouching. But if i have it my way, i do none to minimal. i don't have a problem with retouching...it is a personal preference...but you can look at a photograph and see over-smoothed skin and over-processed eyes and it makes the person look all creepy..and i think most people, if they are being completely honest and objective, would agree that there is a 'too far' line and when it's crossed, it's really obvious.

I think that is the beauty of being an artist, deciding how you want to finish our canvas. For some the natural speaks to them and for others they love the heavy photo shopping. Clients are not forced to hire us, they hire us because they like our style. That's why it's great there is so much diversity so we can all choose what makes us happy. The second someone tells me what I should be doing, takes away the whole idea of being an artist!

I guess it's up to each of us as artists and to balance that with what our clients are expecting (if we're talking about portraits). But, my personal feeling is that I want to show true beauty and real folks in my work, not what I deem a 'perfected' version of them. I am not against PS for blemishes and such (things that aren't always there anyway), it's just not my thing to make people look different than they would in real life. But, to each their own...

Unless its a photo manipulation to create surreal things but with photography I do very little editing too unless you ask me to do a lot of editing but I like models to look natural if you use photoshop do use it to where you can't noticed its been use people over use the tools

OMG.

shared this on facebook but dear Lord, this woman is amazing and should be shared everywhere. and the part where the music slows takes my breath away. oh...but then she continues...and steps and then becomes parallel with the floor. OMG. i really do think in my past life i was a dancer. or maybe in my future life, i'll be a dancer.  all i know is that i long for it. i can't wait for SYTYCD to start again. and like my dear friend, lexia, shared...pole dancing should so be added to the show.

ETA: so interesting that there were 80 dislikes on the above video.  i mean, in comparison -- 5591 likes to 80 dislikes is not much -- but why...dislike?

what ____ looks like | month four

another crazy month. come and gone. i'm not really sure where it even went. but thank goodness i have some pictures to remind me. here’s a bit of what november in tampa, florida looks like [kind of crazy to still be catching butterflies, swimming, wearing shuts and running around barefoot]…

finding and holding a butterfly, in our front yard.

ALWAYS dirty, dirty feet. kids play outside barefoot every day.

one of skyler's gifts to me. they usually end up on my inspiration board. that's where she likes them.

yep, this is how i found them one day.

the barn nursery. sky loved holding the piglet until the barn dog became interested. then she got too nervous.

we so love seeing the new additions. these were the new ducks, who are now pretty big. last time we were there, they were in the geese pen and the geese were crazy protective over them [and loud]. we're waiting on baby bunnies to be born. any day now.

more new barn friends. with each visit, we always seem to find new friends.

the deer were so timid when the barn first got them and now they love to be pet.

this guy scares me. i finally was able to take a picture of him, but not without hissing at us.

sometimes i like to explore the other areas of the barn with the kids. sometimes they don't.

the only place ryder wanted to take flat stanley was...under water.

location scouting for my editorial shoots.

playing on a tire swing. sky was doing all kinds of tricks. she's pretty fearless.

sky also seems to sit on the couch every way except how she's supposed to.

ummm...homework and TV.

there’s a group of 12 of us participating in this what ____ looks like monthly project.  i hope you’ll check them all out [clicking link to link]. next up... stephanie moore | tucson senior photographer.

fav finds | week seven

yes, it was supposed to be fav finds friday but i had two editorial shoots this weekend and my friday ended up being consumed with prepping for the shoots.  so  here with go with fav finds monday. hope you enjoy... love this

these geometric animals, to hang on the wall, are so cool

i do something like this every christmas for my neighbors and friends, although i usually useregular mini pretzels, dip the pretzels in white chocolate and then add two M&Ms. they're such an addicting snack.

would love to make one of these for each of my kids, in a theme of what they love or are into [and maybe a christmas idea for the cousins].  hmmm...the kids could even help create the cousins.

seven-layer dip [made with homemade guacamole] is one of my absolute favorites to bring to parties and pot-lucks. so love the look of this one. i also love bringing a side of garlic-garlic dip.

i used to make friendship bracelets all the time as a kid.  here's a couple cool tutorials for macrame bracelets.

this is just pretty darn fabulous. i would love to own a print.

i'm craving this. i think i'll make this tonight with some grilled chicken.

and i'm going to try this idea because the salad [in the bag] always seems to go bad in my fridge. i'm hoping that if i prep the salad ahead of time, it will actually make it's way to our plates.

i'd love to have this clock [and the table and the lamp] in my home

i'm really not a very good vegetable eater, but my friend leah swore by roasted vegetables.  so i gave them a shot and have to say...i love them.  this is the recipe i use, although i add zucchini and fresh garlic too.

i really should read this regularly

ridiculous

i remember seeing this dove video many years ago.

and now this, which i saw on facebook this morning and thankfully seems to be going viral.

the edit is ridiculous. the more i look at the before and after, it just makes me sick. and of course, to make things worse, what is one of their features -- the new skinny pills. we need to spread the word, especially to our children, that many most almost all of the photos we see in these types of magazines are NOT real. they are NOT something to aspire to. they are extremely retouched, airbrushed, liquified, etc. we all need to be teaching our children this, while they're young. and reminding them regularly.

i also came across this website today, OFF OUR CHEST, whose mission it is to 'make the world a happier place for women (and girls)'. seems very interesting and i plan to further explore for sure.  they support the self-esteem act, to protect our girls (petition found here).

ETA:  adding pat's comment (from below) here in my post because i just love it so much...

Beauty is confidence. Beauty is someone who is unabashedly themselves. Beauty is knowing that being ‘you’ exudes an incredible power. Beauty lives in each of us – if we can just allow ourselves to let it shine.

Teaching this to my children is the most important thing I can ever do.

see you in april?

i'm super excited to share that leah and i are holding our fourth WALLFLOWER FRIENDS RETREAT at seal cove inn, moss beach, california [right outside half moon bay and about 40 minutes from san francisco].  the 2-1/2 day retreat will be held APRIL 27th - 29th and we have the entire inn reserved for our retreat.  limited to 14 photographers. all the details and registration information can be found here. and you can see what some of the previous guests had to say about the retreat here.

hope to see you there!

fav finds friday | week six

while i didn't just find homeland, i can't seem to get enough of it. especial since dexter has been overwhelmingly disappointing this season.

haven't tried this but i'm hoping it works -- baking soda and peroxide. and dish soap and peroxide = oxyclean.

i really want to grow my own little avocado tree.

thinking about making something like these but with thumbprints instead of fabric and reindeer instead of reinbirds.

such an amazing series. i'm pretty certain i blogged about mr toledano before but i just went back to visit the other day so i thought i'd share again.

another incredible series of photographs of a dad documenting his daughter over many years. and here's a little interview with the photographer, jack radcliffe.

happened to see something similar in anthropologie and then came across the tutorial the next day. considering some inspiring words for the home. and from the image title, looks like this photo was taken at anthropologie too.

super love this template.  blogged all about it here.

apparently, a working camera transformer from 1985.  seriously wishing the toy industry would put something like this back out there. so cool! hmm...maybe i could disassemble one of ryder's transformers and make one of these myself with a holga or diana i have. yep, i'm so doing that.

a few children's books / series i think every family should own.

sandra boynton books were my absolute favorite books to read to the kids when they were toddlers. we own them all.

shel silverstein poem books. this one was recently released. we own them all and read his poems almost every night.

if you haven't read this book, you must! without a doubt, every family should own this one.

ha!!

my mom is a great baker. she used to sell the fancy german tortes she made, when i was a kid. but this was my all time favorite -- toasted coconut clusters. none of the optional stuff. just straight chocolate and toasted coconut.

just happened to sample this recipe [turkey and sausage chili] the other day, while in publix. it was awesome and such a great idea for turkey leftovers. making it today.

need i say more...

so thankful

being military and living wherever the military sends us, we rarely are surrounded by family during the thanksgiving holiday. i actually can't remember the last time i saw family at thanksgiving [probably in my 20s]. but we almost always have invitations from friends [often our military family] on thanksgiving day. this year was no different -- loving friends opening their hearts and homes to us, for thanksgiving dinner. BUT we declined those invitations because we thought we were going to spend the day at disney world.  UNTIL we learned that even thanksgiving day itself is one of the busiest days of the year at disney. so very last minute, we decided to do a simple thanksgiving late-lunch [turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, green bean casserole, stuffing, strawberry jello salad and pumpkin pie] at home, followed by a movie [hugo to be exact]. we are so blessed and fortunate. and i am so thankful...

for every little bit i've been blessed with.

wishing you all a very happy thanksgiving -- surrounded by and doing whatever you love and choose to do on this day of celebration and gratitude.

thank YOU! xo
