Tips to Help You Prepare for Your Senior Session
PLAN AHEAD
Schedule your session well in advance to ensure availability with your favorite photographer and to have enough time to prepare and discuss ideas with your phtoographer.
WARDROBE
Bring a variety of outfits, including casual and dressy.
Incorporate what you love and makes you feel confident.
Avoid large logos and words; you should be the focus of your photographs, not the logo on your shirt.
Layering can add depth and visual interest. Consider bringing a jacket, cardigan, scarf, or hat.
Less is more with jewelry. If wearing a necklace, keep in mind that a pendant-style necklace can shift out of place when you move around.
Don't forget to consider your shoes in regards to your outfit choices and the session location.
Check your clothing for wrinkles and pet hair.
Remember that your photographer would love to help you with your wardrobe. Reach out and text photos at any time to discuss.
When you find yourself unsure about which colors might be best for your session, turn to the color wheel for inspiration. Begin by considering the dominant background colors of your chosen location. Locate that specific color on the color wheel and explore the shades directly opposite it.
Spring Session: If your session is amongst flowers, it's best to avoid patterns and lines, opting for a simpler wardrobe instead. Some colors to consider are soft pastels, pinks, purples, yellows, and white.
Beach Session: Opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics that are comfortable to wear. Flowy and loose-fitting clothing are great for beach sessions as it captures movement. Pastels (pink, coral, peach, etc.), orange, red, navy blue, and white work great for beach locations.
Autumn Session: A variety of textures and layering work great. Embrace rich, earthy tones. Browns, oranges, yellows, purples, and deep reds are all excellent choices for Fall.
HAIR & MAKEUP
The goal is to look and feel like the best version of yourself.
GIRLS: Opt for a natural look that enhances your features.
Whether you choose to do your own makeup and hair or hire a professional, the key is that you feel like yourself and confident.
Your hands will be in some of the photographs; make sure your nails look nice and polish isn’t chipped.
GUYS: If getting a fresh hair cut, it’s best to get the cut at least a week in advance.
Don’t forget to trim your nails.
GLASSES
If your glasses are non-glare, you are all set. If not, you can ask your Optician to remove the lenses from an extra pair of frames. Most will do this at no charge. Be sure to talk to your Optician about this well in advance of your session date.
PERSONALIZE YOUR SESSION
Props are an awesome way to bring your personality and interests into your photo session. You might consider sports attire, a treasured item, a musical instrument, or a hobby-related item. The possibilities are endless. Unsure about a prop? Reach out to your photographer prior to the session to discuss.
REST & HYDRATION
Get a good night’s sleep before the session and make sure to drink plenty of water to be good and hydrated.
Don’t forget to bring a bottle of water with you to your session.
Also, make sure you’re not hungry or excessively full and no gum during the session.
FRIEND OR FAMILY MEMBER
Having someone you trust with you can help you feel more at ease during the session.
Your friend or family member can also help you with outfit changes, carry your belongings, and offer you encouragement to help you feel more relaxed.
COMMUNICATE
Communication with your photographer is key.
Share any specific ideas, preferences, or concerns with your photographer before the session. This will ensure that you are both on the same page and your photographer can capture the images you envision.
If you have found specific poses on IG, Twitter, Pinterest, or from friends that you love, feel free to share those with your photographer.
Get input from your photographer regarding your wardrobe, accessory, and prop selections.
Trust me — your photographer wants to collaborate with you to make certain you have the best and most-personalized session possible.
TIME MANAGEMENT
Plan your time well on the day of the session to avoid feeling rushed.
Give yourself enough time to get ready, travel to the location, and have a buffer for unexpected delays.
Remember that you have limited time with your photographer and if you are late, it will cut into your session time.
ENJOY
The most important thing is that you enjoy the experience.
Relax, trust your photographer, and have fun together.
The session is a celebration of your senior year and a way to capture memories of this special time in your life.
