"Two elements must therefore be rooted out once for all –
the fear of future suffering,
and the recollection of past suffering;
since the latter no longer concerns me,
and the former concerns me not yet.”
– Seneca
AN EPISTOLARY EXCHANGE
Utilizing an embroidered communication method has proven to be a powerful and creative means of bridging gaps and fostering connection. My sister and I have embarked on a journey of collecting photographs and exchanging notes — sharing memories and emotions in a structured and deliberate manner. Through the art of embroidery, we have collaboratively found a medium that encourages introspection and provides a safe space for expressing thoughts that have been been difficult to convey face-to-face.
For generations, verbal communication has been a struggle within our family. However, with the creation of these embroidered letters, we envision them becoming cherished artifacts for future generations, capturing the very essence of our deepest thoughts, memories, and questions. Furthermore, it is our hope that through this project and unique form of communication, our children will come to recognize the challenges we faced and break free from this pattern of "lack of open communication."
This epistolary exchange in embroidered format has offered a precious opportunity for healing, understanding, and building bridges. It has provided an avenue for us to authentically express ourselves, fostering empathy and connection along the way. These embroidered letters stand not only as tangible records of our shared journey but also as symbols of our continued efforts to overcome communication obstacles and strengthen our familial bonds.
